Call for Papers

Overview

The metarheinmain chaos days 101b is a semi-annual congress with a focus on all aspects of IT Security. It will take place from September 1st through 3rd 2006 in Darmstadt, Hessen, Germany.

Topics

We are looking for speakers on a variety of topics, regarding current trends in IT Security. Wether they are meant for the general public or specialized interests, all are welcome.
The following topics form the backbone of the mrmcd101b:

Biometrics

Ever since biometric sensors have reached maturity, they have been implemented with accelerating speed. Their use in passports is just the tip of the iceberg of their many uses. What is remarkable is the amount trust put into them - even though their ability to function can be effectively impaired with simple household supplies. Thus, we are interested in usage sites of biometric sensors, implementation details as their security.

Surveillance

Running the gamut from CCTV to data retention and mining, this topic lends itself to a variety of subjects. While the technical implementation of storing vast amounts of data is challenging, not being surveilled in the first place gets increasingly difficult.

Cryptography

The symbiosis of technical realization and mathematical theory forms the core of this topic. On the one hand, the implementation of cryptographic algorithms has contains a wealth of pitfalls, on the other hand, recent cryptanalytic successes have fast forwarded their dates of expiry. Still, their importance for business and science is steadily increasing. Be it as a way to elude communication surveillance, as a defense against competitive intelligence or as a means to secure web services, cryptography has a multitude of use cases. As such, this topic lends itself to cookbooks as well as scientific papers.

IT Security

A catch all term for all of the above, this topic is nonetheless centred on the practical aspects of the security of IT systems. With fragmented packets, zero-day exploits and MP3-worms on one side and firewalls, hardened operating systems and honeypots on the other, it provides a fertile ground for presentations and workshops.

Publication

The proceedings will be published on the Intarwub as well as in a dead-tree edition. All authors wishing for inclusion in either form must supply their work with copy rights enabling the Chaos Computer Club to do so legally.
No presentation slides will be printed in the physical proceedings.

Deadlines

Abstracts must submitted by July 15th, 2006 at the URL https://pentabarf.cccv.de/submission/mrmcd101b/. Notification of acceptance will follow by July 15th, 2006. Accepted papers must be submitted by August 1st, 2006 in final form.

Technicalities

Lectures should be given in either English or German and must be either 60 or 120 minutes long. This includes a question and answer section. Longer presentations, workshops or events must be checked with the organizers first.

Submitting parties should include the following data in their submissions:

  • Name
  • Short Biography
  • Contact address (at least one public email address, additional addresses will be printed as well)

Papers must include the following data in addition to the above:

  • Title
  • Subtitle
  • Abstract (An abstract of the event's content (max. 250 letters))
  • Description (A detailed description of the event's content (250 to 500 words))
  • Attachments (Additional Information that will be published on the Intarwub: Links, Slides, etc.)

Further Information

Since the Chaos Darmstadt e.V. is a non-profit Organization, we are unfortunately unable to pay any fees. Help on the travel expenses is generally possible and is to be agreed upon after acceptance of the lecture/workshop. Low priced accomodation can be organised.
